Mixamo for animals and creatures
Mixamo is made for humanoid characters: its auto-rigger asks for the chin, wrists, elbows, knees and groin, and its animations are human motions. A dog, a dragon, a spider or a snake does not fit. MonRig fills that gap. It rigs non-humanoid creatures in the browser and generates their animations from the creature's own skeleton: the walk, run, attacks, hurt and defeat of a four-legged animal, a flyer, a six-legged insect or a fish, baked as FBX and GLB for Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot.

When Mixamo is the better choice
If your character is a standard humanoid and you want realistic, motion-captured moves, Mixamo is free and its library is huge. Use it.
When MonRig is
- Your character is not a humanoid: four-legged animals, dragons, insects and spiders, snakes, fish, birds, slimes and ghosts.
- You have many creatures and want them to share one clip set with stable names (Idle, Walk, Run, Attack_1…), so one Animator setup serves the whole roster.
- You want game moves for a creature, such as a bite, a tail whip, a wing attack or a sting, that a humanoid library does not have.
Questions
Does Mixamo work with animals or four-legged creatures?
Not really. Mixamo's auto-rigger is made for humanoid characters (it asks you to mark the chin, wrists, elbows, knees and groin), and its animations are human motions. A dog, a dragon, a spider or a snake has no place to put those markers.
What is a Mixamo alternative for animals and creatures?
MonRig rigs non-humanoid creatures in the browser: four-legged animals, dragons, birds, insects and spiders, snakes, fish, slimes and humanoids. Instead of a motion library it generates every clip from the creature's own skeleton, so a centipede walks like a centipede.
Is there a free way to rig a quadruped?
Blender is free and its Rigify add-on includes animal meta-rigs, but you place the bones, set up the controls and animate every clip by hand. In MonRig, rigging up to three creatures and previewing their animations is free; baking and downloading the finished files is paid per creature.
Can I use Mixamo and MonRig in the same game?
Yes. Both deliver FBX files with the animations baked in. Many games take their humanoid characters from Mixamo and their creatures from somewhere else; MonRig also rigs humanoids if you want one pipeline for both.
Is MonRig made by Adobe or connected to Mixamo?
No. Mixamo is a product of Adobe; MonRig is an independent tool made in Germany and has no connection to Adobe or Mixamo.
Mixamo is a trademark of Adobe. MonRig is independent and not affiliated with Adobe or Mixamo; what this page says about Mixamo is taken from Mixamo's own pages.
