Creature rigging and animation tools compared
Most rigging tools are made for humanoid characters, and most creature rigs are animated by hand. Which tool fits depends on two questions: what body your character has, and whether you want to animate it yourself or get a finished animation set. This page puts the common tools side by side, each described from its own pages, MonRig included.
| Tool | Body types | Animations | Runs in | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MonRig | 22 body types: four-legged animals, dragons, birds, insects and spiders, snakes, fish, slimes and humanoids | Generated from the creature's own skeleton: 16 core clips for every creature and 37 optional ones by anatomy, steered with dials | Web browser, nothing to install | Rigging and previewing free; baking and downloads paid per creature (credit packs from €10, plans from €19 a month) |
| Mixamo | Humanoid characters | A library of human motion-capture clips | Web browser (Adobe account) | Free with an Adobe account |
| Anything World | Fixed categories; insects and dragons coming soon | A fixed clip set per category | Web app + engine plugins | Free plan with one model download; from $30 a month |
| AccuRIG | Two-legged characters | ActorCore mocap library (paid clips) | Desktop app | Free rigging; motions paid |
| Rigify | Any, by hand; animal meta-rigs | Keyframed by hand | Blender (built in) | Free |
| Auto-Rig Pro | Any creature, set up in Blender | Keyframed or retargeted by you | Blender add-on | $25 or $50 once |
| Cascadeur | Humanoids and quadrupeds | Keyframed by you with AI and physics help | Desktop app | Free non-commercial; from €19 a month |

Questions
What is the best tool to rig and animate a four-legged animal or a dragon?
It depends on what you need at the end. For a creature that should walk, run and attack in a game without animating it yourself, MonRig rigs it in the browser and generates the whole animation set from its skeleton. If you animate by hand in Blender, Rigify (free) and Auto-Rig Pro (paid) give you a full control rig. For humanoid characters, Mixamo and AccuRIG are free and made for exactly that.
Is there a free auto-rigger for animals and creatures?
Rigging is free in MonRig: you rig up to three creatures and preview every animation in the editor without paying; baking and downloading the files is paid per creature. Blender with Rigify is free too, but you place the bones and animate every clip yourself.
Which tools generate creature animations automatically instead of by hand?
MonRig generates every clip from the creature's own skeleton (16 core clips, 37 optional ones by anatomy). Anything World rigs and animates models with its own AI pipeline and library. Mixamo and AccuRIG cover humanoids. In Rigify, Auto-Rig Pro and Cascadeur you animate yourself, with more or less help.
Can I rig a model from Meshy or Tripo for a game?
Yes. Export it as FBX, GLB or OBJ and upload it to MonRig: it gets a skeleton for its body type and a full animation set for Unity, Unreal or Godot. See the guides for Meshy and Tripo models.
