The preview skin is now the bake's skin

The animated preview in the editor now binds your mesh the same way the bake does. What you see moving before you bake is, within a hair, what the bake gives you.

Until now the editor's preview used a quick approximation of the skin. Many of you took it for the final result, and it could look worse (or better) than the bake.

The preview now runs the same weighting as the bake, in your browser: the same bone heat, then the same clean-up steps (seams, twins, feet, the floor). Nothing is uploaded for it.

Measured on 13 of our own creatures, in posed frames of their clips:

  • average distance between preview and bake: 0.87 % → 0.05 % of the model's size
  • vertices more than 2 % off: 50 % → 3 %

Three rare repair steps, for meshes where the normal weighting fails, still run only in the bake. On a model with holes or loose pieces the two can still differ a little.
