Skinning: low-poly legs and paws that followed the chest

Two fixes to how legs are weighted. On low-poly models the hips no longer pull half of each lower leg, and paws no longer move with the chest where the two front legs meet.

Where two body parts meet, the bake blends their weights over a band of flesh so the joint bends smoothly. Two cases where that band reached much too far:

  • Low-poly legs. The band was counted in rings of the mesh. On a coarse model a few rings are the whole leg, so the hips held almost half of each lower leg and 5 of 7 clips tore at the legs. The band may now never cover more than a part of the limb it sits on.
  • Paws that followed the chest. Where the left and right front legs meet under the chest, the band ran all the way down to the paws. On our test cat, paw vertices pulled by the wrong side: 26 → 1. The forearm now holds 77 % of its own flesh (was 59 %).

We checked both rules against every creature in our skinning collection; none got worse. The editor's preview follows the same rules. Your creatures get the new weights on their next bake.
